A ministry with history – built for the future

The Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB) puts sustainable development at the heart of its work. Established in 1986 as the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU), it was expanded to become the current BMUB in 2013, when the policy areas of building and urban design were added to its remit. Prior to 2013, other ministries were responsible for building policy in Germany.

Combining these formerly separate areas of policy is in keeping with an integrated approach to both. Addressing the environment, construction, housing, and urban development together gives rise to synergies and sustainable and holistic approaches to problem solving. Ecological and economic issues are not mutually exclusive, but are in fact intertwined.

The pages that follow present an overview of the most important environmental and building policy developments of the last few decades, until the two policy areas were merged in the BMUB.
