UN Decade on Biodiversity 2011-2020

In December 2010, the United Nations declared the period 2011-2020 as the United Nations Decade on Biodiversity. Biodiversity encompasses diversity within and between species and the diversity of ecosystems. With biodiversity in decline worldwide as a result of human activity among others, the community of states proclaimed the UN Decade on Biodiversity with the aim of putting a stop to the further loss of biological diversity. To this effect, the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity adopted the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 and the so-called Aichi Biodiversity Targets. The vision of this Strategic Plan is a world of "Living in harmony with nature" where by 2050, biodiversity is valued, conserved, restored and wisely used, maintaining ecosystem services, sustaining a healthy planet and delivering benefits essential for all people. In 2007 Germany adopted the National Biodiversity Strategy containing targets and measures to be implemented by 2020.

UN Decade ambassadors actively ensure communication on the topic of biological diversity to the public. In addition, many events have been organised in the context of the UN Decade and for the International Day for Biological Diversity on 22 May.
