World Maritime Day

Our seas and oceans are of vital importance for our climate, human health and food security.

At an international conference in Geneva in 1948 the International Maritime Organization (IMO) was established, a specialized UN agency that develops and maintains a comprehensive regulatory framework for shipping. The IMO focuses on areas such as safety, environmental concerns, legal matters, technical co-operation, maritime security and the efficiency of shipping.

The United Nations created the World Maritime Day to celebrate the international maritime industry’s contribution towards the world’s economy, especially in shipping. This international day is used to focus attention on the importance of the marine environment, maritime security and shipping safety. World Maritime Day was first held on March 17, 1978.
