Tony de Brum, the former foreign minister of the Marshall Islands, died on 21 August, surrounded by his family, following a long illness. He was awarded the alternative Nobel prize by the Right Livelihood Foundation in 2015.

On 8 August, former US vice-president and filmmaker Al Gore will screen his "An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power" documentary in Berlin. The preview will be followed by a discussion on the fight against climate change with federal environment minister Barbara Hendricks, Al Gore, filmmaker and environmental activist Hannes Jaenicke and WWF director Eberhard Brandes. more

At this year’s High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, over 40 countries including India, Japan and Brazil submitted progress reports – far more than last year. This demonstrates countries’ growing interest in implementing the 17 SDGs of the 2030 Agenda. The consultations also centred around the question of SDG financing. Germany already presented its first progress report last year. more

Together with representatives of the city of Bonn and the United Nations, State Secretary Jochen Flasbarth launched a local campaign entitled “Natürlich Bonn” (naturally Bonn) and reported on the latest progress in COP preparations. The campaign is intended to gear the citizens of Bonn up for this big event. From August, local citizens will have the opportunity to participate in various climate action activities. more
