The Federal Environment Ministry has launched a special award to recognise the international commitment of municipalities to establishing sustainable infrastructures. The award has a special focus on public service areas such as water management, waste water disposal and waste management. There is a great need for action in these areas at international level and great potential for German expertise. more

Minister Hendricks' week-long trip will include the G7 Environment Ministers' Meeting on 15 and 16 May in the city of Toyama in west Japan followed by political talks in Tokyo and finally a visit to the destroyed Fukushima reactors on 19 May to learn about work being carried out on the site. more

The theme of this year's European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR) is "Stop Food Waste!". Over 280 actions have been planned, in which municipal waste management companies, Federal and Länder authorities, city and consumer agencies, educational institutes and environmental initiatives are involved. To kick off the EWWR, Parliamentary State Secretary Florian Pronold called for the more responsible use of natural resources. more
