World Water Day 22 March 2018

Water flows into the hands of a boy

The United Nations calls on all countries to support World Water Day on 22 March 2018. World Water Day was launched at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 and has been celebrated every year since then.

The theme of the 2018 World Water Day is Nature for Water. This year’s World Water Development Report, which is published every year on UN World Water Day, focuses on the same topic. The heading for 2018 is "Nature-Based Solutions for Water”.

The aim of World Water Day 2018 is to canvas for a stronger consideration of the potential of near-natural or natural solutions in water management that benefit ecosystems. The valuation of the many services provided by ecosystems is also an important objective.

Water is naturally stored in forests, grass- and wetlands. Semi-natural alluvial flood plains are multi-functional ecosystems that provide a whole range of eco-system services such as flood retention basins and habitats for a plethora of fauna and flora species. In many cases green infrastructure works can either replace or at least effectively supplement nature-encroaching technical structures and thus mitigate the impacts on the environment.

The Outcome Document adopted at the Rio+20 Conference reaffirms this target in paragraph 122: “We recognize the key role that ecosystems play in maintaining water quantity and quality and support actions within respective national boundaries to protect and sustainably manage these ecosystems.”

World Water Day aims to raise awareness, particularly among the general public, about these global targets and their importance at local level. All countries are invited to use World Water Day to implement UN recommendations and carry out appropriate specific initiatives at national level. Information on World Water Day is available on the UN website.

Since 2011, the Federal Environment Agency (UBA) has selected a water body type of the year. The choice for 2018 is “small sand-dominated lowland rivers” predominantly found in the low-lying regions of Germany and in particular in North Rhine-Westphalia, Lower Saxony, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Brandenburg, Schleswig-Holstein and Saxony. For World Water Day on 22 March 2018, the Federal Environment Agency will publish a flyer and a poster and create a website (German) with more information.
