Petersberg Climate Dialogue VIII

"Working together on solutions"

Federal Environment Minister Barbara Hendricks is hosting the eighth Petersberg Climate Dialogue on 22 and 23 May 2017 in Berlin together with the Fijian Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs and incoming president of the next UN Climate Change Conference, Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama. Since 2010, the annual dialogue has provided the opportunity for countries to engage in an informal exchange of experiences on international climate policy.

This year, the meeting of representatives from 35 countries is taking place under particular circumstances: the first small island state presidency of a UN Climate Change Conference and Germany’s G20 presidency. This presents the opportunity to focus even more on the impacts of climate change which are already being felt, but also on the economic benefits of an ambitious climate policy. Adaptation to climate change and resilience are laid down in the Paris Agreement and take priority in many countries. Moreover, the parties made a commitment to limit global warming to well below two degrees Celsius and to even make efforts to stay below 1.5 degrees Celsius.

At the eighth Petersberg Climate Dialogue ministers will discuss which measures are needed for the complete, effective and swift implementation of the Paris Agreement in the face of new challenges in a multilateral world. Along with adaptation to climate change, the talks will focus on national long-term strategies and development paths towards a greenhouse gas-neutral global economy.
